The Distribution Of Food Aid To Regions Of Kenya Where There Are Food Security Issues

Food aid has been distributed to 6 thousand 500 people living in the Kakamega, Mumias, Butere, Bungoma and Busia regions of Western Kenya and the city of Isiolo in Eastern Kenya by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency Directorate.

The drought, land conditions, primitive farming and lack of capacity in certain regions of Kenya is having a negative impact on agricultural production potential and threatening the ability to secure food. In this context food aid has been provided by TİKA to 6 thousand 500 people living in the Kakamega, Mumias, Butere, Bungoma and Busia regions of Western Kenya and the city of Isiolo in Eastern Kenya, with the participation of local authorities and TİKA personnel. The packages that were prepared to include macaroni, oil, flour, tea, sugar, salt and rice were distributed to people in need who were predetermined by local authorities.

Areas in Kenya where there is a priority problem concerning food security were chosen as target regions. The draught going on in the Eastern part of the country has had an adverse effect on the people living in the area whose main source of income is agriculture and livestock in addition to the main health problems that come with malnutrition. Also the uneven terrain of the area limits the amount of farming land per family in populated areas making it harder to secure food.

The food aid distributed to families in need in the city of Isiolo and Western Kenya made it possible for families and their children to receive food nutrition for a certain period.
