03 May 2021TİKA Provides Agricultural Support to Zimbabwe
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has provided seeds and agricultural pesticides to 80 farmers living in the Mashonaland West province of Zimbabwe.
In order to develop the agricultural industry, which is the livelihood of the people who live in the rural areas of Zimbabwe, 80 farmers from the Mashonaland West province were delivered corn seeds, fertilizer and pesticides which were procured by TİKA.
As part of this project, which has been carried out in cooperation with the Helping Hand Association and the Zimbabwe-based Islamic Information Bureau Association, the farmers were handed out 2.5 tonnes of corn seeds, 60 tonnes of fertilizer and various agricultural pesticides. The sowing procedures will begin in May under the supervision of the Ministry of Agriculture of Zimbabwe. After sowing, which will be carried out by 80 farmers on a land of 10 hectares, it's expected that 150 tonnes of corn with a market value of 60,000 dollars will be produced.
Thanks to its favorable climate and geographical structure, Zimbabwe has a great advantage and potential when it comes to agricultural production and product range. However, even though the country used to be called “the breadbasket of Africa”, now almost half of the population lives below the poverty line.
Even though the farmers have become landowners thanks to the land reform in Zimbabwe, they are still facing serious problems in production because they do not have agricultural machinery and the input costs are extremely high.
TİKA provides support in agricultural production for the farmers of Zimbabwe, while also contributing to the food safety of the people of the region.
