27 December 2018TİKA Provides Food Aid for 700 Displaced Libyan Families
Around 16 tons of food aid was provided for 700 displaced families that were placed in various locations of Libya's capital, Tripoli with the cooperation of Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) and the Libyan Red Crescent.
Despite the positive steps and extraordinary efforts taken by Libyan authorities after the clashes between various groups that resulted in casualties and injuries in the Libyan capital, Tripoli, the problems about basic needs including health, clean water, and food continue due to the political and economic crisis in the country and ongoing clashes.
In the negotiations between the Libyan Red Crescent Tripoli officials and TİKA, officials stated that the Libyan Red Crescent works under very difficult conditions, that they enter conflict regions, evacuate civilians and help the wounded as Red Crescent as they are accepted by all parties. However, as the Libyan Red Crescent, they have been financially unable to sustain this job and they need aid like food, cleaning material, bedding, blankets etc. for the civilians who were evacuated from conflict zones and placed in various public buildings and camps in the capital.
In this context, TİKA provided around 16 tons – 700 packages – of basic food needs, including pasta, rice, tuna fish, cheese etc. to Libyan Red Crescent Tripoli Branch for families displaced by the conflict in the region.
Speaking at the ceremony held to deliver the aid to the Libyan Red Crescent Tripoli Branch, Turkish Embassy in Tripoli Second Secretary Muratcan Akel said, "We thank the Libyan Red Crescent for accepting the modest help of the Republic of Turkey and the Turkish people for the Libyan citizens in need who had to leave their homes and go to safer regions of the city due to the clashes in Tripoli between August 27 and September 25, 2018.”
The food aid was implemented as a continuation of Eid Al-Adha Meat Distribution Project, which was carried out in Libya with the cooperation of TİKA and the Libyan Red Crescent Tripoli Branch for around 450 families affected by the war.
TİKA plans to provide personnel trainings, cloths, and other technical support for the Libyan Red Crescent.
