Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) provided a 10 thousand-liter tank and installed 3 gardens with irrigation systems for the local people in the Swartkop region of the Oranjemund town of Namibia to make agricultural production.
In Oranjemund, where mining is the main source of income, local residents of the region had become impoverished due to unemployment and the loss of income as a result of the decreased activity of the mining companies. TİKA provided a 10 thousand-liter tank and installed 3 gardens with irrigation systems for the local people in Swartkop near the Orange River to enable agricultural production.
Practical and theoretical training for agricultural production was provided
In cooperation with TİKA and Oranjemund Town Council, the “Swartkop Community Garden Project” was carried out in order to guide the residents of Swartkop, who live 10 km away from the city center and have to cover these distances to access food, towards income-generating activities, to increase the employability of them, and to ensure food security. With the project held, practical and theoretical training for basic agricultural production was provided for the community in Swartkop.
It will contribute to the local economy
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the project, the Mayor of Oranjemund, Elias Kasemba stated that they expect this project to ensure the food security of the local people and to be a sustainable source of income. Highlighting the implementation of the project with a comprehensive mentality, Kasemba noted that the project would contribute to the local economy. Lastly, Kasemba thanked Türkiye and TİKA for their support.
It is aimed that in those 3 greenhouses which have the capacity of growing 1000 crops, 20 people would directly and 200 people would indirectly benefit from the project.
