13 October 2021TİKA Supports Peruvian Flower Growers
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) established a cold storage room for flowers in Tarma, located in Peru's Junín Region, to support and strengthen the Peruvian floral industry in the context of the Support Program for Agricultural and Rural Development in South America.
The project which was launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI) aims to support the sustainable development of small and medium-sized producers and to encourage the productivity, competitiveness, and the expansion of the sector.
Additionally, the project, which is a part of the 2030 Flower Chain Development Plan that is supported by the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), aims to establish infrastructures for post-harvest processing of flowers and to prevent major losses for producers by extending the life of flowers. The flower storage room, with its daily capacity of up to 6.5 metric tons, is expected to benefit 240 families of the ‘Perla de Los Andes’ Association and the agricultural producers of the city of Tarma, known as the “City of Flowers” in Peru.
The Head of Agricultural Development and Agroecology of the Ministry of Agricultural Development and Irrigation (MIDAGRI), Augusto Aponte Martínez, said the project would be "very beneficial for the development of the sector as well as the economic prosperity of flower growing families". Martínez thanked the Turkish Government for its support.
On the other hand, the Mayor of Tarma, José Luis Mansilla, emphasized how important this support was by saying: "This cold flower room is a big success for our farmers in Tarma, but especially for flower growers, who were the most negatively affected group by this two-year-long pandemic."
Modesto, a flower grower from the region said: "Tarma is very lucky to have this room. Therefore, I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude to TİKA that provided it, thank you so much."
