27 December 2021TİKA Supports the Ecosystem in Kenya
Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) built an Organic Liquid Seaweed Fertilizer Plant in Mombasa, which has a population of nearly 1.5 million.
A liquid seaweed fertilizer plant was built as part of the project, which was implemented in cooperation with Pwani Marine Non-Governmental Organization, which has mostly young members and aims to protect marine life. Liquid seaweed fertilizer is a renewable and eco-friendly product that contributes to the ecosystem.
The support provided covers the entire production process of liquid seaweed fertilizers. The Agency donated a motorboat for the collection of seaweed; the necessary tools and equipment for the processing of seaweed and the production of fertilizers; and a Tuk Tuk, a three-wheeled transport vehicle that facilitates the transportation of the product from the beach to the plant.
The project also included the construction of a trial garden, where the organic fertilizers produced would be tested and displayed for sale.
Liquid seaweed fertilizers are produced through a fermentation process that does not require any additional chemicals. These fertilizers are known as eco-friendly products that boost agricultural production, thanks to their production processes that does not generate any hazardous waste, as well as their successful applications in organic farming.
The project aims to contribute to food security and sustainable agricultural production through the use of innovative and eco-friendly fertilizers in the long term; to provide employment opportunities to young people; to ensure the protection of seas and coasts; and to promote organic farming.
