TİKA Preserves Ottoman Heritage in the TRNC

The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) has completed restoration and exterior lighting works at the historic Turunçlu Fethiye Mosque, located in Nicosia, the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

As one of the key symbols of Ottoman and Turkish heritage on the island, the mosque’s physical condition was improved, while the newly installed exterior lighting now highlights its architectural details and historical texture even at night.

Situated within the Walled City of Nicosia, near the Lokmacı Border Gate, the Turunçlu Fethiye Mosque was built in Hijri 1240 (AD 1825) by Seyyid Mehmed Aga, the then-Governor of Cyprus. The mosque features a 148-square-meter prayer hall and can accommodate approximately 210 worshippers at a time.

An important monument from the Ottoman era, the mosque draws significant attention from both the local community and tourists due to its architecture and spiritual atmosphere. Featured in visitor brochures, the mosque has been aesthetically and functionally revitalized through the recent restoration and lighting efforts.

With this project, TİKA contributes to the preservation of the Ottoman heritage in the TRNC and ensures that the traces of the past are carried into the future.
